The actual meaning behind every folklore song, part 1

Hey guys, welcome back ! So folklore is out since over a week now, isn’t crazy? Time to speak about the meaning meaning behind the songs. Let’s start!

The 1

This song is about a old ( fictional) relationship, where one of the central people asks themselves if one thing would be have been different in the past, if everything would have been different for them today.

Cardigan

There’s a collection of three songs I refer to as The Teenage Love Triangle. Cardigan is written from betty´s perspective and is about her and James relationship. She remembers back to the time as they both were together and how she felt to this time

The last great american dynasty

The last great american dynasty tells the story of Rebecca Harkness, Taylor and the Rhode Island Mansion, which is known as „Holiday House“ Rebbeca, owned the holiday house a time before it was bought by Taylor. Rebecca was known for one of the wealthiest woman in America during her lifetime, which was punctuated with wild antics and famous stories.

exile (feat. Bon Iver)

Exile describes two ex-lovers seeing each other following a break-up.

Justin Vernon (leader singer of the band Bon Iver) describes feelings of confusion about how quickly a lover moved on, while Taylor offers a perspective about repeated warning signs that the relationship was no longer working.

my tears ricochet

My tears ricochet is about an embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession, which could be about Taylor loosing her master. This song was also the first song she has written for folklor.

mirrorball

This song could be about Taylor Swifts career. The whole circus imagery tells how Taylor feels as a performer in the music industry having to reinvent herself so the audience stay entertained. Then the tight rope imagery. Of course her whole journey must feel like walking on tightrope, the way she is scrutinized and judged for everything she does. The chorus sounds like she's talking directly to her fans who can relate so much to her songs, and assuring them that she's still spinning in her highest heels, shining just for us.

Another theory said, that this song could be meant out of the perspective of a girl, who really tries to be liked by a boy. (I personally prefer the first one)

seven

seven could be about one of Taylors childhood friends who seemed to have a unhappy life at hom. Over all she reflects back on her innocent back then, how she thought the problems could be easily solved.

august

August is another song of the love triangle. It tells the story of a summer romance, with james who cheated on Betty with another girl. This song is written out of the perspective of the summer girl.
